Heatons and Reddish
Three types of official and semi-official records of local service personnel are included here:

1. War memorials and lists of the war dead

The war dead from the district are commemorated on three civic memorials (Heaton Chapel/Heaton Moor, Heaton Mersey and South Reddish), at least twenty church memorials (not all transcribed here) and a handful of school or association memorials. In addition, a list of former scholars from St Thomas' Day School who had died was published in the Stockport Advertiser.

Heaton Norris and North Reddish have no civic war memorial.

(Note: In some cases names have been retranscribed in alphabetical order for clarity.)

2. Rolls of honour
In addition to their memorials to the dead, Heaton Mersey Congregational Church, Baker Street Congregational Mission, Hanover Congregational Church, Wycliffe Congregational Church, All Saints' Church, Heaton Norris, Lancashire Hill Sunday School, St Elisabeth's Church, Reddish, and North Reddish Junior School have rolls of honour showing all those who served in the war and survived. The Heaton Moor Golf Club Roll of Honour lists all its servicemen without indicating who died and who survived, as do the Rolls of Honour of the Reddish Spinning Company and Thomas Houldsworth & Co.

Note: The 1st - 8th (City) Battalions of the Manchester Regiment were the Manchester “Pals” battalions, subsequently renumbered as the 16th - 23rd Battalions. On some contemporary records there is a degree of ambiguity when “City” is not precised.

“Roll of Honour”

“The manly spirit fostered on the playing fields in the Stockport district has been nobly turned to account in the present national crisis, and the Heaton Mersey Cricket, Tennis and Lacrosse Club is to be congratulated on its fine response to the country's call, 62 members having joined His Majesty's forces. We understand it is the intention of Mr. Robert Crook (the President) to have erected in the pavillion a permanent record to their honour, and we have much pleasure in publishing the list of names to date:”
