Note: This Roll of Honour has been transcribed from a photograph in the archives of Marple Local History Society, which appears to have been taken prior to the end of the war. The original document is in roughly alphabetical order, apart from a dozen names at the end, while there is room for further names to be added: the ending date of the war is blank.
With one exception, all known dates of attestation are before the end of December 1915.
The Marple website would be very interested in hearing from descendants or relatives of these men who could add to the information they have already compiled, particularly regarding their life after the war.
3. Published lists of servicemen
During the first half of the war (roughly up to the introduction of conscription), several lists of servicemen from the churches and associations of the district were published in the local press. These are shown below, although some have been summarised and/or retranscribed in alphabetical order for clarity.
Stockport Advertiser, 25 Sep 1914.
“Big Batch of Congregationalists with the Colours”
"At Hatherlow Congregational Chapel on Sunday, the Rev. Dr Powicke [...] read out a list of members of the church now with the colours. These included Sergeant Tatlow (2nd Dragoons), Colour-Sergeant McWilliam, Private Duncan McWilliam (his son) - Sandy McWilliam has since joined - Messrs Richard Guthrie, James and Albert Cropper, Norman D. Howarth, Smith, Frank Turner, Wilde, Tom Young, Sydney Burgess, Charles Henshall, Captain Hamer, Albert Butler, William Powell and Alfred Hackney."
Stockport Advertiser, 9 Oct 1914.
“More Footballers Join the Colours”
"Ernest Wood, George Cropper and Arthur Little having joined the Stockport Battalion of the Territorials, 15 of the 22 players who signed for the George Lane A.F.C. have now joined the ranks. The George Lane Sunday School have sent others in addition to footballers. The latest recruit who went with the above named is George Seddon. Harry Knowles and Richard Wilkinson, of the Bredbury Athletics Corps, have also joined."
